The Kangaroo Gallery
Kangaroos at Groningen
A troop of Kangaroos loaded with infantry of the RHLI pauses on the outskirts of Groningen, Holland, on 13 April 1945.
By this time, Canada's war was all but done. What was left of the formerly mighty Wehrmacht was in complete disarray, with only isolated pockets of resistance left to mop up. Nevertheless, it was a trying time for our men, because no one wanted to be the last to die in a war that was for all intents and purposes, already won, yet 'the job' had yet to be completed. The Kangaroos themselves had suffered their last loss on the 12th, and were to lose no more, but they'd already left seventeen of their number behind. These shall be remembered forever.
The lead Kangaroo in this picture is interesting because it sports earlier straight steel tracking, as opposed to the more normal chevron type commonly pictured. This tank is a late model Ram II.
