I really like what you have going on here. As a member of the quickly vanishing Canadian Armoured Corps, I understand the need for keeping people aware of where we came from and where we can find ourselves if we continue to forget. Thank you to all those involved in this website, before and after the war.

Very interesting site. My dad, Joe Walsh, served as a loader operator in a Sherman tank with the Grenadier Guards in Northwest Europe. His tank was disabled at Friesoyethe and his crew bailed out into a drainage ditch where they spent a long day pinned down by sniper fire. They were rescued by a carrier which was already carrying several wounded troopers. He was very interested in hearing about your website.Thank you for sharing the history of your regiment.

Superb. Updates seem to have stopped in 2000? It is almost 2004? I am a modeler and gamer doing mostly WWII in Europe and Russia. There is a source of Kangeroo models at www.quarter-kit.com. You need a Solido M4A3 Sherman model. The kit provides the hull for the Kangeroo using the M4A3 suspension and lower hull. 1/48-1/50 scale. I am working on a Canadian infantry platoon and am quite happy to have found your site. best of luck Mike

My grandfather, Rowland C. Marshall, was a member of the Kangaroos. I'm a historian, and currently hold all of my grandfather's pictures, medals, badges etc. from his time with the Kangaroos. I treasure those items, and am delighted to have found this website! There is one picture on the site of a man standing beside a Kangaroo, with part of the caption reading "The gentleman on his feet..." That gentleman happens to be my grandfather! When I return to Canada, I would love to show the items and pictures I have from my grandfather (who passed away in January 1988) for more clarification. Thank you for such a wonderful website, and for preserving the memory of men like my grandfather.

An excellent site on a little known regiment with a distinguished reputation in WW2. My main interest is Canadian military history and I build 1/35 armour models as well. I actually have a kit (Italeri) of a Priest Kangaroo but I know that it needs a lot of detail. I have been perusing this site as reference. Keep up the good work on this site as it is an invaluable research tool for those with an interest. More importantly, it educates those without an interest into this innovative and unique unit that was "ahead of its time" in thinking and concept. James McQueen

I have just discovered your website and must say it is tremendous. I regard it as privilege to know a kangaroo and feel he is a friend. I am speaking of Vic Norburn. He might have been known as Vic Yorke-Norburn during the war but we know him as the former, now. I am the curator of The Lorne Scots Regimental Museum and would like you to know that Vic has loaned quite a large number of artifacts to us. Even though there is or was no connection with the Lorne Scots we have placed his beret with the badge in a prominent place in our museum and his battle dress appears in our poster.

Great Site! I definately will be checking up for more updates regularly. My father, Tpr. Dan Wilde served with the Kangaroos. He passed away in 1962 and I did not have a chance to find out about his service during the war. The only thing I had to go on was his hat badge, shoulder flash and the triangular bullshead badge. I have been trying to get more information regarding the Kangaroos, but in most books I've read they barely receive a mention. I am looking forward to finding out more through your excellent web site.

As a scout car driver/operator , H.Q.Squadron 31 Armoured Brigade I have reason to be grateful to the driver of a "kangaroo" during the assault on Boulogne. as part of Column "B" our mission was to seize bridges in the town.In the afternoon of 16th. September 1944. Due to being a wheeled vehicle I was experiencing difficulty keeping mobile through the craters and spoil from the heavy bombing earlier.Eventually I became "bogged down". The driver of a following Kangaroo pushed me clear onto reasonable ground and I was able to proceed into Boulogne as part of the column. The 3rd. Canadian Division was to take the town. In the publication "The Story of the 79th. Armoured Division" the assault on Boulogne - pages115 to 127 the Kangaroos are mentioned but the unit is not defined, could it be you? Without the help of the Kangaroo driver I was a sitting target.

As a crew member of a Kangaroo of the 49th.RTR (49APCR) I was very aware of the tremendous contribution to operational efficiency and casualty reduction that Kangaroos contributed. I recall that when in Njemegen preparing for the Rheichswald offensive we were designated as Canadian with appropraite signs on the vehicles etc. (and for that time I was issued with a revolver as my personal weapon - rather than the unweildy Sten gun we Brits hd. A question I have often asked myself when seeing Infantry of so many nations travelling in their Carriers - 'Have the Canadians ever been afforded the credit they deserve for the development?' I suspect the answer is 'No'. Having read the story of the one man crewed early Kangaroos I can only admire the determination that made the concept work.

Looking for someone who knew Steven Schop (exact name spelling uncertain). He was a Scotsman, probably Canadian Scotsman, who died during the battle of Heinsberg in Jan 1945 on the Dutch-German border. As far as I know, the 1st Canadian Armoured Carrier Regiment was the only Canadian unit in the triangle Roermond-Sittard-Brunssum at that time. For this reason, I think he may have been with the 1 CACR. Or were there any other other Canadians in the area? He died when a granade or shell exploded in his tank. Does anyone know about such an incident which happened in the second half of Jan 1945?

Just surfed in via Maple Leaf Up. To all Veterans of the 1CACR: next Friday the 13th of April it will be 56 years to the day in 1945 you your Regiment took part in the Liberation of the City of Groningen with Units of the 2 CID. I was living there with foster parents as a 12 year old refugee from Amsterdam. One of your Kangaroo's was destroyed in the City and a few days after the Battle for Groningen was over I came accross a turretless tank and could not figure out where the turret had finished up. I think the name of the Kangaroo was Phillis, who were in the crew?. Do have a photo of it before its demise? I have a photo of the RHLI being lifted on the way to Grongingen. Last but not least: My Gratefull Thanks to You All, Il be thinking of you next Friday like I have done for 56 years. John Maljers, from the land of the original Kangaroo.

Well done on a very informative site. The type of information you have provided will compliment the badge of your Regiment that I have on display in my collection.

VERY well done site! I was not familiar w/ the unit, just the vehicles used and I'm glad I came across it through AFV News. A fine way to illustrate the history of 1CACR; Kudos to all involved and all who served!

A very fitting honour to a valuable and too-unsung unit. Could you include a diagram of the unit's organization in some future iteration of your page?

The Kangaroo website is absolutely terrific Geoff, and you and your contributors should be very proud! The people I have shown it to, all have given me very positive responses. Many people are impressed by the volume of "real" information.. and I know that this is just the beginning ! It is a significant contribution to recording a nearly forgotten part of Canadian history and a fine educational tool. These men deserve our gratitude and appreciation, this is a giant leap towards "officially" recognizing their contribution here,in their own country, and more importantly that it is NOT forgotten. Again, job well done.

Great site. I've always had an interest in Kangaroo's but I never realized until several months ago until I came across the Mill site that the 1CACR even existed. My Dad had driven a Kangaroo for the last several months of the War but it was in the Governor General's Foot Guards. Apparently they were continually outrunning their infantry support so they had some infantry attached to their Regiment for support and for guard pickets when they stopped at night. Keep up the good work!!

Since I was one of the first members of the Kangaroos, before we were known as a Regiment or as Kangaroos, I am happy to see that we finally have a home in Canada. Many thanks to Geoff and Hanno for the many hours of hard work. A job you can be proud of.

Well done to the men of the 1CACR, the drivers and fitters, the gunners and signalers. 55 years ago this year your short history came to an end. The record you established, the tactics you devised and the methods you developed are as important now as they were then. Thank you.

Welcome everyone! This is the definitive website for one of the most significant regiments ever to serve Canada and her Allies. Due to their unique circumstances of creation, service and disbandment, the Kangaroos have never received their 'just due' - until now! Please add your comments to this guestbook, and feel free to contact us at any time. Thank you for visiting!
